Visits to locally owned, independently operated businesses and boutique hotels are one of our favourite vacation experiences. Road trips are a terrific way to ease back into travel as we reacclimate to pre-pandemic travel patterns. These 5 road excursions are the ideal short getaway, whether your goal is to get away from the summer heat in New York City or simply to discover a new locale close by.
Here are the top day trips from New York City, including the most opulent regions of New England and beautiful, emerging Catskills communities.
1. Westerly, Rhode Island
Westerly, a charming seaside village with a view of the Atlantic Ocean, is located two and a half hours by Amtrak or three hours by car from New York City. The Relais & Châteaux property Ocean House welcomes guests to stay there. Visitors have free use of the OH! Spa, a private white-sand beach, the Mercedes-Benz borrowing fleet, the Center for Wine & Culinary Arts, and cooking workshops with no additional cost on the property.
2. Finger Lakes, New York
The Finger Lakes region is less than a five-hour trip from NYC and has 11 pristine lakes, superb vineyards, fantastic hiking through scenic gorges, and historical sights. The Inns of Aurora are located on Cayuga Lake and offer a wonderful home away from home experience. You can stay at the ornately furnished Zabriskie House at this location and spend an afternoon with the Director of Serenity, who creates unique organic tea and essential oil blends. Visit the local Heart & Hands Wine Company to sample their pinot noirs or spend a tranquil day hiking at Watkins Glen State Park away from the property.
3.Pocono Mountains, Pennsylvania
With a travel time of under two hours, the Pocono Mountains are a quick retreat from New York City. If you want to really immerse yourself in nature, consider staying at Cranberry Run Campground. Campers can relax at the on-site outdoor pool or visit the nearby Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area for hiking, canoeing, kayaking, and rafting. It is bordered by 65 acres of woodlands.
4.Niagara Falls, New York
You may travel 400 miles north of New York City in seven hours and arrive in Niagara Falls, New York. The journey itself is really picturesque, and there are numerous opportunities for hiking and picnic lunches along the way. When you enter Niagara Falls State Park, the rainbows, mist, and tremendous roar produced by the American, Horseshoe, and Bridal Veil Falls will overwhelm you.
5. Haines Falls, New York
The Catskills made the list twice because they are so lovely. The area offers amazing outdoor adventures with its breathtaking waterfalls, distinctive villages, and stunning scenery. The Great Northern Catskills’ Haines Falls is home to Kaaterskill Falls, the state’s tallest flowing waterfall. The year-round trail, which is roughly a mile and a half round-trip, is open. The Glen Falls swimming hole at Round Top, which is a favourite stop for roadtrippers during the warmer months, should also be visited.
