On Monday, May 2, 2022, the country reopened to international travelers for the first time in more than two years. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern was there to greet them.

During the pandemic, New Zealand had some of the strictest border rules in the world. From late 2021 to May 2022, only New Zealand citizens and permanent residents could enter the country. However, travelers from the UK and 59 other countries on the visa-waiver list can now visit New Zealand without a visa.

When will New Zealand start letting people in?
Since June 20, travelers from anywhere in the world can cross New Zealand’s borders without showing proof of a negative test.

To enter New Zealand, travelers will still have to show proof that they have been fully vaccinated, unless they have a valid medical exemption that must be recorded at least 72 hours before flying.

People who fly into New Zealand still have to fill out a Traveller Declaration to get a New Zealand Traveller Pass, which they have to show at the airport where they left and at customs in New Zealand.
